RAH DX Athrun (2005) was off model and had a funny pose. G.E.M. series Athrun (2012) resembles Hirai's character design more, but it also has a slightly inaccurate hairstyle and is obviously meant to be looked at only from certain angles (meaning not from these ones). The head is adjustable because it's attached to the neck by a peg, but it's not about the head, it's that spine and, and.

2011 to 2012

Very late, but happy new year!

2011 was, collecting-wise, very slow. There was the happy presence of Re-ment in local stores but the stocks were not updated as promised (where's the Rilakkuma?) After splurging on the European Grandma series and deciding the Tsukiji Sushi series was not cute enough to complete, I stopped buying completely. In the meantime, I bought a few Sylvanian Families accessories. The bf also helped by getting me a dinner set, and by surprising me with some other non-mini stuff, such as the Megahouse Okita, and this one, before the year ended--

Totally unexpected.

I expect 2012 to be just as slow, if not slower, because figure collecting has to give way to uhh intelligent spending, but the online window shopping will continue, and when the Rilakkuma sets come here I will definitely start running all over the place.

I will also cautiously write in the Cheerful ver. nendoroid Kaito and the Moritaka nendoroid into my plans for the year. And maybe plan better housing; the playsets don't work as well as they used to.

For someone who started buying Re-ment mainly as accessories and furniture for nendoroids, the recent Rilakkuma releases have been a source of frustration.

They're cute, but they're absolutely not compatible with the nendoroids I have.

But they're cute.

But they're also too big for the scale I'm working with, and while that can be said for a lot of pieces in my collection, those ones aren't character goods. The Rilakkuma series is unmistakably Rilakkuma. I don't even know Rilakkuma that well.

But they're cute.

I'm torn between want and back off now there's a good dear. Here's what I mean by that.

Hopefully by putting this up and by going through each item repeatedly I will be able to dissuade myself from buying any of these in the near future. Besides, I have already passed on what is the only other nendoroid I would go out of my way to purchase, and that says a lot about self-control (more like the current state of my wallet, but let's pretend it's the self-control).

I...haven't mentioned there were cafe tables, have I?

I was actively buying miniatures until the first half of 2010, after which I momentarily lost the interest and the drive for them. I only started looking at pieces again a few weeks ago. My last purchase for the year would probably be the Toymaker's Set from Sylvanian Families.

P.S. I had to cancel my last few figure preorders, but I swear, I will have that Megahouse 1/8 Okita. Someday. I'm already dreading the color prototype for the Katsura one. And I preordered this today, even though I've never read the series. He's too adorable, and I love all the accessories, and I'll be blunt -- I want that lamp.

These are really, really small. Like 4mm x 4mm small. If L were standing it'd only be a little taller than him. Anyway, I got the Tokyo Tower set for my birthday.* Planning to get the Kinkakuji one soon.

* Last year was a bit epic, celebration-wise, but this year was very quiet. Sensei stayed in his box and I had too much work and zero sleep. Too bad since I already bought us matching cakes. No, really.

The post office and I, see, we're usually on good terms. Sometimes they muck things up, but they always make up for it in some unexpectedly nice way. But customs and I, that's a different story. I have only the deepest hate for them, mostly because they'll single you out for some reason that'll only make sense to them. You can order box after box and they won't bat an eyelash, but if you're unlucky enough, you'll land some d*ckhead who'll do his best to make a quick buck off you.

And that's what nearly happened to these two sets. I narrowly escaped paying double for them because of some timely 'divine' intervention (__ and __ will definitely be spoiled this christmas), but the process of waiting and retrieving sucked all enthusiasm out of me. When I finally got them, I only opened the boxes, looked at the contents, then put them all back. I think I'll be keeping them unopened for a while.

(Fly by review: both series are slightly bigger than I initially expected. I shouldn't have been surprised because recent releases like the European Grandma and the Pooh's Hunny Cafe have been on a larger scale than old Re-Ment, but I was surprised anyway.)

Now I'm apprehensive about these other ones I've ordered--

Altair's Natsume Takashi (late July)

Megahouse's Okita Sougo (early October)

-- because they'll surely come in humongous boxes (Megahouse in particular can be stupidly impractical about their packaging), and big boxes are easy prey for customs d*ckheads. One way to avoid dealing with them is to go for SAL instead of EMS, but I've already lost packages via SAL.

This is stupid.

The wallpaper I chose for the kitchen didn't turn out very kitchen-y, so I tried to make a bedroom instead. Next time I do this I think I'll paste over the partition on the top.

The faulty white balance is there to annoy those who like their white balance balanced.

I've given up on the lost packages, though I still hate the inconsistencies of international shipping.

There's also this thing with releases coinciding with Golden Week. The earliest things will get processed will be Thursday next week, which means things get shipped to me early next next week, which is a terribly inconvenient time to get packages.

Also, buying shokugan from exclusive shops means you pay twice/thrice the SRP. Add another thousand yen for the middleman.

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother.

I didn't make the ganache; I just rolled bits of it in matcha. And I still have some powder left over. As is always the case with gorging on good things: I think I'll lay off matcha for a while.

P.S. On the figures side: I officially lost two packages in the mail, so that's exactly four sets of minis.

I saw a cute photo of toast with egg in the middle and wanted to do something like that, but I didn't have a round cutter, and the jar lid I used just squished the muffin in the middle. Meh.

Also, I've started a short photo project inspired by the 365 Toys project at Flickr. There's someone who's been taking one photo a day of her nendoroid Sebastian Michaelis, which is so adorable. I thought I'd do a mini version of that project, thus: L 20 (at Tumblr). I haven't really used L that much since I got him, so maybe this'll be a good time to start.
